Preparing for Your First Cosmetic Injectable Appointment

Taking the step to book your first cosmetic injectable appointment is exciting — and it's completely normal to feel a little nervous too. As someone who has guided hundreds of first-time clients through the process, I want to share everything you need to know to feel prepared and confident.

Before Your Appointment

2 Weeks Before

  • Stop blood-thinning supplements: Avoid fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, and St John's Wort, as these can increase bruising
  • Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen: Switch to paracetamol if needed for pain relief
  • Research your goals: Look at before-and-after photos, but remember that everyone's results are unique

1 Week Before

  • Limit alcohol consumption: Alcohol thins the blood and increases the risk of bruising
  • Stay hydrated: Well-hydrated skin responds better to treatment
  • Avoid dental work: If possible, schedule dental appointments for a different week

Day Of

  • Come with a clean face: Remove all makeup before your appointment (or we'll help you do so)
  • Eat a light meal: Don't arrive on an empty stomach
  • Wear comfortable clothing: You'll be reclined during treatment
  • Bring reference photos: If you have specific goals, photos help us communicate

What Happens During Your First Visit

The Consultation (15-20 minutes)

Your first visit always begins with a thorough consultation. This is where we:

  • Discuss your aesthetic goals and concerns
  • Review your medical history
  • Assess your facial anatomy
  • Explain treatment options and set realistic expectations
  • Create a personalised treatment plan
  • Answer all your questions

I cannot stress enough: there is no such thing as a silly question. This is your face, and you deserve to feel fully informed.

The Treatment

Once you're comfortable with the plan:

  1. We take "before" photos for your records
  2. The treatment area is thoroughly cleansed
  3. Topical numbing cream is applied (we wait 15-20 minutes for it to take effect)
  4. The injections are performed — most clients describe the sensation as a slight pinch
  5. We assess the results together
  6. Ice is applied to minimise swelling

The actual injection process usually takes just 15-30 minutes.

After Your Treatment

Immediately After

  • Mild swelling and redness are completely normal
  • Small bumps at injection sites typically settle within hours
  • You might notice tiny bruises — these usually fade within a week

First 24 Hours

  • Don't touch or massage the treated area
  • Avoid strenuous exercise
  • Skip the sauna, steam room, and hot yoga
  • Sleep on your back if possible
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Apply ice wrapped in a cloth for 10 minutes at a time if needed

First Week

  • Results will continue to settle and improve
  • Any bruising can be covered with mineral makeup after 24 hours
  • Lip filler swelling peaks at 24-48 hours, then gradually subsides
  • Final results are visible at approximately 2 weeks

Managing Expectations

One thing I always discuss with first-time clients is the importance of realistic expectations:

  • Start conservatively: You can always add more at your follow-up, but you can't easily take away. Less is more, especially for your first treatment.
  • Results are not identical on both sides: Perfect symmetry doesn't exist naturally, but we work to create the best balance possible.
  • It's a journey: Many clients achieve their ideal results over 2-3 sessions, building gradually for the most natural outcome.

Red Flags to Watch For

While complications are rare with a qualified practitioner, contact us immediately if you experience:

  • Severe or increasing pain after 48 hours
  • Skin that appears white or blue around the injection site
  • Vision changes (extremely rare but requires urgent attention)
  • Signs of infection: increasing redness, warmth, or pus

Choosing Your Practitioner

Your practitioner is the most important factor in your injectable experience. Look for:

  • Registered healthcare professional (nurse or doctor)
  • Specific training in cosmetic injectables
  • Before-and-after portfolio of their work
  • Willingness to answer all your questions
  • A focus on natural results rather than overfilling
  • A clean, professional clinic environment

You're Ready!

The most important thing to remember is that a good practitioner will never pressure you. If at any point during your consultation you decide you're not ready, that's perfectly okay. Your comfort and confidence always come first.
